Liver Fat and its Health Complications

Liver is the second biggest organ in our body which is responsible for many biochemical and metabolic functions such as storage of nutrients and digestion. When fat is accumulated in the liver it is called ectopic fat and is related to diseases such as type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome and obesity. The majority of people believe that consuming little or no alcohol won't have any impact on their liver...however, that is not true. The excess of ectopic fat within the liver is called steatosis and this condition can lead to the appearance of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD). This is a benign condition and can lead to inflammation in the liver and if it gets worse can even lead to liver cancer and failure. Many researchers concluded that males usually accumulate more liver fat than women but for both genders liver fat % is high between the age of 40-49. Therefore, it is extremely important to consume nutritious foods in our diet combined with supplements (vitamins, minerals etc) and exercise in order to keep our liver healthy and detoxified.
