What you need to know for diabetes related to pregnancy

Gestational diabetes occurs in most women during pregnancy. When you are pregnant hormone changes occur and this also has an impact on how the body reacts to blood glucose levels. Therefore it is important to control your weight and do physical activities like yoga or walking every day. This will help both the mother and the baby to get all the nutrients they need and also stay in shape for a healthier and easier pregnancy.
If diagnosed with gestational diabetes or even if your blood glucose levels are slightly higher during pregnancy, there are some important steps to start off in order to keep your blood glucose within a normal range.
- Eat three main meals and at least three snacks throughout the day
- Add protein in every meal combined with fats and healthy carbohydrate options. Protein combined with fat will slow the absorption rate of carbohydrates.
- Better to choose fibre- rich carbs like whole grain breads and cereals, dried beans and lentils and also prefer to eat fresh fruits and veggies rather than drinking juice.
- Choose Low Glycemic Index (GI) foods more often since they will raise your blood glucose at a slower rate, make you feel full longer and help you maintain your body weight. Some examples of low GI foods include: steel-cut oats, barley, quinoa, apples, bananas, berries, orange, mango, pomegranate, strawberries, milk (cow’s, skim - 1% or 2%), yogurt (1% or 2%), beans like lentils, chickpeas and kidney beans.
- Keep in mind your portion sizes and never eliminate snacks between your meals since this will help maintain a healthier blood sugar.
Therefore, a well-balanced diet combined with exercise and also prenatal vitamins will help you have normal blood sugar which will be also important for your baby’s health.
